TVs have always been a source of entertainment for people all across the world. But coming to the quality of the videos we watch nowadays is extremely high quality. Though the confusion remains of 720p vs 1080p 4K vs 8K Resolutions.
We had to wait for hours to watch our favourite shows and programs on Tv during the ’90s. The makers had no technology to show higher quality videos (2K, 4K). And also we didn’t have the TV’s to show videos of that quality. But we were all pleased and fully content with what we had.
But in today’s time, we can’t watch a low-quality video or movie. There is such great chaos, misunderstanding, and rivalry in terms of resolution. We should know about the video quality and have a detailed knowledge of what resolution entails. On the other hand, knowing the significance of the video’s quality is also important.
People believe that the higher the resolution of a frame, the higher the video’s quality. And the brighter and sharper the picture we receive. Before considering and claiming that the video is of decent quality, one must know these things and variables.
Well, this article will help you with all questions you may have about resolutions. Before we get deeper into the definition and discrepancies of resolutions, you need to know a few things. For example, know other considerations that influence the quality of the video.
Before we get into the mess of options, we need to understand what screen resolution is. Screen resolution calculates the number of pixels in terms of height and width.
Suppose a TV has a 1920 x 1080p, which means its height is 1080 pixels and its width is 1920 pixels. And the total amount of pixels this resolution will hold is 1920 x 1080 = 2073600 pixels.
Known Screen Resolutions
- 720p (HD, 1280 x 720)
- 1080p (Full HD, 1920 x 1080)
- 1440p Resolution (Quad HD, QHD, 2K, 2560 x 1440)
- 2160p Resolution (Ultra HD, UHD, 4K, 3840 x 2160)
- 4320p (8K, 7680 x 4320)
Whenever we talk of the resolution, the word “pixels” pops up every single time, but what it is, and what it means? Get to know here.
Pixel is the illumination of the image, the building blocks for each display. They are tiny dots where the videos or photographs are composed. And the place where the dots merge to send us the videos and pictures we watch on the screens. It’s the standard programmable colour on the computer screen.
The aspect ratio is nothing but the percentage of the two variables of the screen resolution. A colon divides the width and height of the screen, it’s like Height: Weight.
The length can be of any unit but mostly compared to inches. Some of the displays widely seen on the market are 5:4, 16;10, 4:3, 16:9.
Pixels Per Inch (PPI)
Pixels per inch is the measurement of pixels per inch of the pixel density unit or of any electronic imagery, for that matter. Although we use PPCM to quantify pixels per inch of the electronic image’s pixel density in some instances.
It’s commonly confused with DPI (Dots Per Inch), but it is quite different. Find out the details below.
Dots Per Inch (DPI)
Pixels per inch is an input, but DOTS PER INCH (DPI) is a system output, unlike PPI.
It is used for printing media and text into a printer using dots, and thus Dots per inch (DPI) is distinct from Pixels per inch (PPI). However, it is a measure of pixels per inch on the input side of an imaging system.
|Resolution||Horizontal x Vertical pixels||Names||Devices|
|720p HD||1280 x 720||High Definition||TV’s|
|1080p||1920 x 1080||Full HD, FHD||TV’s, monitors|
|2160p||3480 x 2160||Ultra HD, UHD, 4K||TV’s, Monitors|
|4680p||7680 x 4320||8K||TVs|
Types of Resolution
720p ( HD, 1280 x 720)
In the market, this screen resolution is almost outdated. It offers two times clearer, smoother, and lighter image than a standard screen. It is ideal for a regular desktop job in offices for data entry work.
But it also considers the video size i.e., gaming, news stations, or streaming services such as amazon prime, Netflix, etc. 720p resolution is of no use; instead, a higher resolution is needed.
Still, it doesn’t mean that it wouldn’t play on your 720p resolution screen, but it wouldn’t be possible to give higher viewing performance.
Many customers are still pleased with the 720p displays, so they are still available on the market. There is a merit of purchasing these types of screens, and it is why they are available at a low price, and the only demerit it has is that there is no possibility to choose it because there are too many choices in the market.
Higher resolution displays offer 3 to 8 times better and smoother image quality than 720p screens.
It stores a compact number of pixels, i.e., 1280 pixels in width and 720 pixels in the height of the screen, and they multiply to a total of 921600 then all the pixels combine to give us a moving optical video or a picture.
1080 P (Full HD, 1920 x 1080)
Earlier, the digital cinema screens used horizontal screens to define the resolution. Still, TV’s used vertically to identify the resolution (going back to glass tube days).
1080p is also a vertical resolution. If we average the supply and demand of screens on the market, this (1080p screens) is the most widely used screen everywhere because it is not very costly, cheaper than other screens, and offers three times better picture quality than a 720p screen. It gives very sharp and bright videos and pictures.
There is a great deal of misunderstanding in people’s minds about why the 1080p resolution is called ‘1K,’ but above that, it’s not called 1K, regardless of its value, ‘2K’ as the same logic as UHD is called ‘4K.’
According to the facts, people usually don’t call it ‘1K’ or call it ‘2K.’ It’s mostly called Full HD or 1080p. This resolution is generally seen on widescreen TVs or displays with an aspect ratio of 16:9.
1080p resolution has a width of 16 inches and can store 1920 inches and a height of 9 inches and store 1080 pixels and, multiply to 2073600 pixels and combine to give us a vibrant and sharp optical video and pictures.
It’s the perfect screen for naive gamers and TV audiences. Most game monitors and TV’s today have a refresh rate of 60 Hz. Besides the cumulative number of times, the picture refreshes every time to display.
With a refresh rate of 60 Hz, the monitor refreshes 60 times before showing the images. For professional gamers, displays of 144 Hz does justice.
It concludes that this screen is very popular because it is very cost-efficient. Suitable for casual gamers who prefer first-person games or shooting games. But its biggest downside is that everybody needs new hardware and higher graphics in the current competitive market.
2160p (Ultra HD, 4K resolution with 3840 x 2160 pixels)
Technically speaking, “4K” indicates a horizontal resolution of pixels comprising 4096 pixels. This resolution is set by DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) because movies differ in aspect ratio.
There is no vertical resolution defined, so yeah, we’re right. Ultra HD TVs are not 4K. However, it doesn’t matter because it’s better to call it 4K than 2160p. After all, the poll shows that people tend to call it 4K rather than 2160p or Ultra HD, even Google and Amazon, and most of the major TV firms call it 4K.
4K Ultra HD is one of the new screen and display resolution and carries 3840 x 2160 pixels where 3840 is the width of the screen, and 2160 is the height of the screen, and both of them multiply to give us 8294400 tiny coloured dots (pixels) which later combine to provide us with crystal clear images.
This screen is four times larger than 1080p. 4K is the best option for the consumer in the market. It’s pricey, but if you have extra money to spare, there’s no better choice on the market than 4K.
If you’re a beginner, this is going to give you the best gaming experience. It will run any game without any issues, but the real challenge is when it gets closed.
Often when the game needs advanced settings, this screen may accommodate resolution. Still, it won’t produce faster frames per second, so you will need to install an additional graphics video card. Often traditional games that do not optimize for this resolution appear blurred on the screen.
4K is still the new and best resolution on the market. And if you had the money for it, you could go for 4K; you won’t regret choosing it.
4320p (8K, 7680 x 4320)
Yes, the most awaited resolution of the 8K screen has yet to come. Filled with 7680 x 4320 pixels, where 7680 is the screen’s width, and 4320 is the height of the screen and multiplies in turn to give us 33177600 pixels. And combining it provides us with the resolution that will come to market soon.
The price is likely to be on the upper end, and not everyone can afford it. 8K provides double with the horizontal resolution compared to 4K and offers colourful images. Simultaneously, even if you stand right in front of the 8K TV screen, you would not be able to see any single pixel cube. It is certainly going to deliver a very thrilling and improved experience.
There’s an infinite world of confounding resolution names that we can’t even recall at this moment. It doesn’t make us ignorant. The titles are very confusing, like FHD (1920 x 1080), WXGA, WUXGA (1920 x 1200). As there is a hell of a lot of resolutions and the advancements are taking place constantly. Honestly, there is no end to it, and we cannot buy new TV screens every month.
4K has gained traction in society for shorthand UHD TV and content. Therefore 2K is now being popular as a shorthand for 1080p. But you have to face this torment when you’re searching for a computer monitor or a cheap data projector.
From the details mentioned above, we learned that both of these screens provide decent graphics and practical working skills. Still, each screen is different from the other, and the price of each screen varies so that the right screen depends entirely on the consumer’s specifications and budget.
There is a wide variety of screen resolution choices, but is it not easy to choose Which screen resolution is better? And apart from the resolutions we just spoke about, some are equally decent but not as common as 3K, 5K, 7K. We can witness it in some unusual devices.
The bulk of the optical cinema projectors used in the theatre are 2K, some of which are lower resolution. 2K has 2048 pixels, and no vertical resolution has been mentioned. Until 4K became popular, we will almost never hear 2K more than movie resolution.
Therefore, selecting the correct screen can be very frustrating and messy, but you need to keep only two things in mind while choosing the appropriate screen and budget. As we have already mentioned, all you have to do is go through the information and choose the best one for yourself.
There is now an infinite variety of screen types and resolutions on the market at the moment. Over time, more new technologies will begin to arrive, and old technology resolutions and displays will continue to become outdated.
Still, the only thing that will stay the same is the method of choosing, which is by determining the need and analyzing the budget and then finding the correct screen accordingly.
And we leave with a question which you should ask yourself, What are your requirements? And also, decide your budget before looking for a laptop or TV screen in the market. Because keeping these things in mind will help to take a decision without any hustle-bustle.
